Who We Are

In 1968, before the Stonewall Riots and the Christopher Street Parades, the Reverend Troy Perry founded Metropolitan Community Church of Los Angeles to serve the spiritual needs of Gay and Lesbian people.

This has grown worldwide to over 300 congregations of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (http://www.mccchurch.org). UFMCC plays a vital role in addressing the spiritual needs of all people, with an emphasis on the Lesbian, Gay, and Transgendered communities around the world. For those of us who were raised in a religious atmosphere, homosexuality was usually associated with shame and guilt. As a result, many of us were cut off from the spiritual dimension of our lives. Metropolitan Community Churches provide an opportunity to explore a spiritual experiences that affirms who we are.

Today, as self-aware and self-affirming Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered people, we reclaim the fullness of our humanity, including our spirituality. We find great truths in the religious tradition, and we find that our encounter with God is transformational and healing. We experience our communities of faith as places of healing and hope, and as places of reconciliation with family.

Our Beliefs

1. We believe in one triune God: God - our Parent-Creator; Jesus Christ - the only begotten son of God; and, the Holy Spirit - God as our Sustainer.
2. We believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God.
3. We believe that Jesus... the Christ... is God incarnate, of human birth, fully God and fully human.
4. We believe that the Holy Spirit is God making known God's love and interest to all people.
5. We believe every person is justified by grace to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
6. We believe we are saved from loneliness, despair, and degradation through God's gift of grace, as was declared by our Savior. Such grace is not earned, but is a pure gift from a God of pure love.
7. We believe the Church serves to bring all people to God through Christ.

Our Sacraments

1. BAPTISM by water and the Spirit.
2. HOLY COMMUNION is the partaking of blessed bread and fruit of the vine in accordance with the words of Jesus, our Sovereign: "This is my body... this is my blood."

Our Church

First Metropolitan Community Church of Kansas was founded in Wichita in 1975. We moved to our current building at 156 S. Kansas in 1990.

Our Purpose

We are people with a great commandment:

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your being and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 11:27)

We are people with a great commission"

"Go into the community and proclaim the Good News to all people." (Matthew 28:19 &20)

Our Vision

First Metropolitan Community Church is the Body of Christ. We believe in God's unconditional love for all people. We are called to nurture and empower Human wholeness through Spiritual Growth, Reconciliation, Social Justice, and Unity.
